Mellon Hall at St. John’s College in Annapolis, originally designed by Richard Neutra, is a hallmark of mid-century modern architecture that recently underwent a comprehensive renovation to preserve its historic character while modernizing the building for current and future campus needs. Working closely with students, faculty, and staff, the design team updated interiors for improved functionality and aesthetics, replaced exterior windows to enhance energy performance, and added space to support the college’s arts programs, with custom furnishings and finishes reinforcing the project’s vision. Today, Mellon Hall functions as a flexible, multi-purpose hub, featuring a central Living Room for study and events, a new outdoor terrace, adaptable meeting and study spaces, a quiet academic lounge, and a former storage area transformed into a studio theater and music rehearsal classroom.
