The Griffin apartment building, with its signature sculpture poised above the front entrance, has become home to several of the Washington’s most recognized private art collectors. Through the use of projecting towers and bays, receding planes and a variety of roof forms, designers sculpted a series of decreasing volumes in response to the Griffin’s diverse context all while maximizing views out over the park and surrounding neighborhoods. Expansive spaces below an intricate roofline presented a unique opportunity to display of art in an active residential setting. Dramatic volumes, formed by gabled roofs and skylighted barrel vaults, function as grand entertainment areas for this in-town retreat and as showcases for extensive art collections.
