Maddox-Muse Center
Fort Worth, TX - 1997
The Maddox Muse Center, which houses rehearsal functions for the Nancy
Lee and Perry R. Bass Performance Hall, is located on three-quarters of
a 200' x 200' block in downtown Fort Worth, directly east of the
Performance Hall. The center includes rehearsal and recital
halls, as well as office spaces for various performing arts
groups. The exterior of the Center gives the appearance of an
urban block divided into separate, smaller-scale structures. This
stylistic decision emulates the scale of an existing building situated
on the northeast corner of the block, which was incorporated into the
facility.
The curtain-wall-enclosed atrium, with an exposed-structure ceiling,
serves as the facility’s primary point of entry and hosts numerous
front-of-house functions. The Van Cliburn Recital Hall can be
identified by its red brick, Flemish-bond pattern and a polychromatic
tile frieze. An acoustical ceiling is designed to match the acoustic
nature of Bass Performance Hall for symphony rehearsals. The hall
hosts an array of functions including the Van Cliburn Piano
competition, banquets and sometimes even acts as a pressroom. The
McNair Rehearsal Hall, on the southwest corner of the block, has a
“deco-inspired” façade with a wide range of buff brick and bas relief
spandrels and friezes. Its sprung floor accommodates ballet
rehearsals and recitals.
